Bayer Corporation and another v Union of India and other
The Delhi High Court is presently hearing a petition, which could have a crucial impact on access to generic medicines. In November 2008, Bayer Corporation filed a Writ Petition before the Delhi High Court against the Union of India, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and Cipla seeking an order that the DCGI should consider the patent status of its drug Sorefenib Tosylate before granting a marketing approval to any generic pharmaceutical company and refuse the marketing approval to generic versions of the drug, while its patent is in force. Sorefenib tosylate, the drug in question, is a drug used to treat advanced renal cancer and liver cancer. Read more
Bombay High Court orders voluntary HIV testing and treatment services in prisons
Treatment in Prisons
On 12 January 2010, the Bombay High Court passed an order which, if seriously implemented by the government agencies involved, would better the lives of those living with HIV across prisons in Maharashtra. The Home Department of Maharashtra State has been directed to complete the following and submit a compliance report by 22 February 2010:
- Vacant posts of medical officers in all prisons to be filled up, including nurses and lab assistants by 20.02.2010.
- Fully functional ICTC Centres to be set up in Thane, Nasik, Amravathi and Yerwada Central Prison by 15.02.2010. Until then/for prisons where ICTC not likely to be set up: patients/prisoners should be taken regularly to Civil Hospitals for medical treatment along with police escort.

Quacks in Maharashtra prohibited from claiming cure for HIV/AIDS
On 10 October 2007, the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court passed Interim Orders [See attachment below] against three quacks Siddharth M. Jondhale, Bhai Amarjeet Singh Major Punjab Singh Gill and Dr. Rajesh Pandit, all of whom claimed alternate forms of treatment that purportedly "cures" HIV/AIDS.Read more
Quacks in Karnataka
On 27.3.2007 The Karnataka High Court passed an interim order in a Public interest litigation filed by Karnataka Network of Positive People Living With HIV/AIDS (KNP+) against some persons in Karnataka who are claiming a cure for HIV/AIDS, Drug controller, NACO and others.Read more
