In an interim order today, the Supreme Court agreed that linking Aadhaar with mobile numbers, and bank accounts not be made mandatory till the Supreme Court decides the case with finality. Initially, the deadline for such linking was set at 31st March, but at the behest of Senior Advocate, Mr. Arvind Datar, the Supreme Court agreed to revoke such order. However, as the Attorney General requested, the five judge Constitutional Bench agreed to not extend such linking deadline to the welfare subsidies, and benefits, funds for which are taken from the Consolidated Fund of India such as ration under Public Distribution System, wages under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, etc. Therefore, for these subsidies and benefits, it is mandatory to link Aadhaar till 31st March, 2018. These are covered under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act.
The Constitution Bench hearing the challenge against the Aadhaar project, today heard Senior Advocate, Mr. P. Chidambaram on the issue of passing of the Aadhaar Act as the Money Bill. Senior Advocate, Mr. KV Vishwanathan has commenced his argument and he will continue them tomorrow as well.
